Scout Launches Water Damage Prevention Program

Scout Launches Water Damage Prevention Program

Scout Alarm have announced that their water and climate sensing kits go on sale in early August through bolt's Prevention Technology program. The program gives homeowners a way to catch a leak in seconds — and take up to 40% off the water damage portion of their insurance premium for doing it. The program launches at prevention.tools through participating homeowners insurance programs supported by bolt’s Prevention Technology program, beginning with VTRO in California.

Highlights

  • Scout-powered water and climate sensor kits available now at prevention.tools
  • Launching through participating homeowners insurance programs in California and Florida
  • Up to 40% savings on the water damage portion of their annual premium once sensors are activated
  • Five sensors under US$100 with free shipping — no hub, no wiring, no technician, and setup in minutes
  • Alerts for leaks, freezing pipes and rising humidity delivered by app, SMS and on-device alarm

The Claims You Don’t See Coming

Water is the quiet destroyer of American homes. Roughly half of all non-catastrophic homeowners claims involve water — a burst pipe, a failed water heater, a washing machine hose that finally gives out — and the average claim runs about US$14,000.

An estimated 93% of water damage is preventable if the homeowner is alerted within minutes. The joint water sensor program launching in August is designed to do just that.

How it Works

Eligible policyholders enrolled in participating homeowners insurance programs supported by bolt Prevention Technology can order a Water + Climate Sensor Kit through the prevention.tools portal, entering their insured ID and carrier at checkout. The kit arrives in three to five days with five sensors. Each sensor connects directly to the home's Wi-Fi and the whole set is typically live within minutes of unboxing.

When a sensor touches water it sounds an audible alarm and fires a push notification and an SMS at the same time. It watches for temperatures dropping toward the pipe-freezing range and tracks the humidity levels that lead to mold and mildew.

Once the sensors are activated, the premium discount follows. Eligible homeowners can expect roughly 40% off the water damage portion of their homeowners premium — in most cases paying back the cost of the kit well inside the first year.

Built for the Extreme

The program is launching through participating homeowners insurance programs in states where homeowners insurance has become genuinely difficult to find – Florida and California. Starting with VTRO in California where large numbers of Californians are pushed onto the state's FAIR Plan of last resort.

Scout Security CEO, Ryan McCall, said:

“Most people find out their water heater failed when they're standing in a puddle. For under $100, which is recouped within a year based on the premium discount alone, a homeowner walks away with a lower premium as well as a dry floor. That's the kind of win-win product we like building. California and Florida are the hardest homeowners markets for insurance in the country right now, and prevention is one of the few things that actually helps.”

bolt Prevention Technology Lead, John McNally said:

“Water damage remains the most frequent homeowner risk, and it is one we have proven can be effectively prevented and managed. By adding Scout sensors to bolt’s Prevention Technology portfolio, we are expanding choice for carriers and homeowners while helping stop small leaks from becoming major losses. Scout helps strengthen our prevention-first approach by enhancing customer engagement, supporting rapid response, and delivering meaningful loss-prevention benefits for insurers and policyholders alike.”
